Hawaii - Created
By Mother Nature Herself
She
did a great job, and it's still a work in progress
Thousands of years ago a
couple of underwater volcanoes erupted. It must have been a magnificent
sight. But the result was even better: Hawaii. An
Island born from the very center of the earth. And Mother Earth did a
great job. Hawaii is one of worlds most popular islands. Here are some
reasons why.
Anybody who ever visited Hawaii, takes
home his own memories. But there are some facts nobody forgets. One of
them is the exotic colors of sand on the beaches of Hawaii –
a direct result of the volcano eruptions ages ago. The lava and the
fertile ocean waters turned the islands into treasure troves of exotic
wildlife. The variety of flowers is overwhelming.
According to tradition, there were people
in Hawaii before there were people in North America. The first
residents of Hawaii traveled from other parts of Polynesia, including
the Marquesas Islands. The United States gained Hawaii from Spain as
part of the treaty ending the Spanish-American War. Hawaii was made the
fiftieth state on August 21, 1959.
Mother Nature did a great job when
creating Hawaii, but as a matter of fact, it is still a work in
progress. The islands are still growing every day. The big island has a
volcano hidden under it that will contribute to the growth of the
islands for centuries to come.
One of the most popular characteristics of
Hawaii is its weather. The temperature is almost always between 60 and
80 degrees Fahrenheit. While typhoons may arrive between June and
November, and while the rainy season goes from September to April,
there is basically never a bad time to visit the islands. Like I said:
Mother Nature adores Hawaii.
I’ll have to be honest with
you: I do not know how many islands there are. That may sound stupid
and lazy (“Look it up Captain!”)
but in fact there are only six ‘main’ islands that
matter:
1 Hawaii (aka
‘Big Island’)
The largest of the chain and has the most nature locales.
2 Maui (aka
‘Valley Island’)
The island was named after the Polynesian demigod Maui. Maui is located
right next to the big island.
3 Lanai (aka
‘Pineapple Island’)
Known for its delicious pineapple crops and is the smallest of the six
islands.
4 Molokai (aka
‘Friendly Island’)
Less developed than some of the other islands but is known for its
amazing beach views.
5 Oahu (aka
‘Gathering Place’)
Has the most dense population and also is the home of Honolulu, the
state capital.
6 Kauai (aka
‘Garden Island’)
Famous for it’s peerless Waimea Canyon and unusual plant
life.
Whether you love tropical rainforests,
mountain views, or beachfront sights, the Hawaiian Islands are for you.
You can hike, ride horses, and take tours throughout the forests. If
you like the color green and what it stands for, you MUST visit Garden
Island, Kauai. It’s Mother Earth’s own laboratory,
where she displays her greatest achievement.
After touring the forests, relax on one of
the beaches. The huge breakers on the north shore of Oahu and the south
shores of Waikiki and Poipu draw surfers from around the globe. Not
into surfing? Go scuba diving or snorkeling. Take astonishing
underwater tours. Or – if you dare - ride a
submarine…
